4/15 ~ 05/05 Exploring Cafe & Bakery & Kitchen

General Floor Plan

Discussion Questions:
Q: How should people feel in the space?

A: Friendly, calm, relaxed, and natural. That is why we started to aim our general theme of Cafe & Bakery to wood

When I was designing this floor plan I was thinking about placing seating area on the 2nd floor. By separating two spaces, I thought it would be efficient to separate from busy/lively atmosphere downstairs. That 2nd floor seating area allows people to go study in a quiet environment to concentrate and spend private time eating delicious bread and drinking coffee at the same time.

General Floor plan for the kitchen

Designed two different doors and ways to interact with customer

Initial Kitchen Ideas:

- Bread making
- Baker
-Oven/Fridge/Bowls/Trays/Shelves/Tables/Pots/Tools
- Simple/clean lights
- Exposed assembly line / kitchen (exhibit)
- Coffee brewery/grinding displays

Eric’s Suggestion

After 04/22’s class work session, Eric suggested a quick sketch to spur thinking about a second level lounge. It was great to include this idea for a diverse interactive of people. If we have to divide 12ft into half, we only had 6ft left to deal with on the first floor of seating area. When we thought about bakery and cafe, we don’t really think about seating on the floor too. Because we were aiming for a mood of relax and calm atmosphere(for seating part), we did not wanted to make a lot of physical activities on the seating section.

04/27

Kitchen Themes

  • Immersive: customers feel involved in process through open kitchen, bread tasting, self-serve pastries, etc.; can see/smell bread
  • Energetic
  • Not super modern but also not super classic/traditional

1st Kitchen Sketch

1st Floor Plan / Isometric Drawing (Version 1)

What was the problem:

  • Isometric square is not isometric and not in a correct ratio
  • Human size should be considered according to the ft scale
  • Detailed utensils missing
  • Color palette will be determined after the discussion

2nd Kitchen Sketch

Version 2

04/29 (Group)

In class work session

Considered about the practicality and realistic aspects of our store, my group came up with two different floor plans.

Q: Why do we need the extra 6ft space between the entrance and counter area?

A: When we think about capacity of the area that allows people to walk around, that extra ft space was essential. We needed an area where cooks can bring baked breads to the counter section and come out from the kitchen. Because our door is 3 x 7 ft, that is how we decided with the number 6ft. Space where we can connect and balance between the spaces.

Q: Should we include the colored walls or leave it as transparent?

A: If we put the wall in transparent, viewers can communicate and understand our drawings easily. Because people can see what is going on in each section, there are a lot of benefits that we can gain. I the wall is not transparent and colored, we have more space to decorate and explore. However, it would be hard to connect within each other.

Notes:

  • Consider/Care about the line weight difference (kitchen and other areas)
  • Talk about the level of details
  • Consider human interactions that can be made within this environment
  • Window on the left section of the seating area is too confusing. Because there are already a lot of things going on for the counter(bread) section we came up with an idea of moving the window to the right wall section.

3rd Kitchen Sketch

Version 3

Weekend Group Discussion

Q: What is the problem?

A: In the bread-tasting area, baker inside the kitchen overlaps with the table. (Door is blocked) Which means the kitchen baker should be moved to left and face the outdoor seating area.

Notes:

  • Counter(bread section) and the seating areas are too close to each other (should consider adding a door(wall))

4th Kitchen Sketch

Version 4

Kitchen should not be crowded because it is a place where baker uses for cooking and food preparation in a dwelling or in a commercial establishment. It is an area where people would be busy preparing breads and organized(clean) at the same time. The right corner of the isometric cube is not crowded because there is a door that bakers go through to bring breads to display/counter. Right corner=Most active area where people come and go.

05/03 (Group)

Weekend Group Discussion

Q: What do we have to consider?

A: Bread pieces on bread-tasting area is not clear. Would be better if a huge bread is shown and small pieces are distributed to the customers. The area of connecting the entrance(bread-tasting area), kitchen, and counter should not be empty with gray background.

Notes:

  • Start adding colors (wood tone)
  • Wood grains on the floor
  • Consider Cafe floor sign (open / Bread & Tea / Coffee & Tea)
